Sober Anniversary

So thankful for all of the Sober Anniversary "love" you guys sent me on Tuesday. I was truly blown away! I was reminded while reading the comments that this is a one day at a time battle. And even when I get to my 27th sober birthday it will still be a one day at a time battle.

The "Fun Meter"

A couple of months ago I found myself sitting on the back porch of a cabin out in Colorado with an older and much wiser friend of mine named, Jay. I'm not sure if you know anybody like this but Jay has a very calming, peaceful, joy-filled way about him that seems so effortless. I've never seen him in a bad mood which totally blows my mind. So, while we we're lighting up some cigars and staring over a beautiful mountain lake, I asked him, "Whats your secret?"

This is how I learned about something I like to call the "fun meter".

Without hesitation Jay began to tell me about the importance of taking care of your fun. For Jay, it's his Harley Davidson. He likes to fire up the Hogg on the weekend with no agenda and allow the road to take him wherever it may lead. He told me about a couple of close buddies that also own bikes and sometimes they go on riding trips together. They wake up early on a Saturday morning when the dew is still on the grass and the sun has risen just enough for them to see the road. They meet up, have a cup of jo and set off.

I thought to myself: wow, I can't think of anything that I do just for the sake of having fun. While Jay continued telling me about his magical motorcycle adventures I was busy trying figure out where I go for my fun. Golf came to mind but I realized that the whole time I'm out on the fairway, I'm thinking about the next song I need to write or the errands I need to run or the fact that the lawn needs to be mowed. I might be physically on the golf course but my mind is someplace else. If I'm being totally honest, I was even feeling this way about music. The reason I picked up the guitar in the first place was because I was moved and inspired by the sound of the records that I was listening to. Here I am, a full-time musician and I can't even remember the last time I allowed a song to just move me without analyzing the lyric or the chord structure. While that thought was streaming through my brain Jay asked me,"When is the last time you rolled down the windows of your car and turned up the stereo LOUD?" I couldn't remember.

Jay helped me to see the importance of taking care of your fun. Over the last three months my free time has consisted of falling in love with music again, golfing with friends, taking walks with my wife and dreaming about purchasing a motorcycle so I can join Jay on his adventure and also to start my own. I share this because I hope that it might stir up the adventurous side of you and that you might experience that same kind of joy that Jay shared with me.

When is the last time you rolled your windows down and turned the radio WAY UP LOUD?! When is the last time you jumped into a pool fully clothed for no other reason than FUN?! On a scale of 1 to 10, what would your fun meter read?

Much love you guys!
